TIFF - Review of Omar Killed Me

Rating - 3 out of 5 - worth renting
Last night I saw Omar Killed Me. See my prior post for a synopsis of the film. Overall the film was good. It was disturbing to know that the film was based on a true story. It reminded me of another film I saw last year at the film festival, Conviction about a man that was wrong accused of murder and his sister who fought to get him free.
In this case, the movie shows how there was no way this man could have killed this person however it was clear from the start that the justice system found him guilty no matter what. What is sad is that there is still no resolution to this story. Omar received a pardon but unlike in Canada, he is still viewed as a criminal.

It's not your typical hollywood film. The film jumps back and forth a bit which is difficult to follow in subtitles however the acting is strong and the message is powerful. It is worth watching and will leave you thinking how many other people are wrongly of accused of something they did not do.

TIFF - Day 1 of the Festival

Well it really isn't Day 1 of the Festival since it started yesterday. It is however Day 1 for me. My first film is titled "Omar Killed Me" (http://tiff.net/filmsandschedules/tiff/2011/omarkilledme). The film is based on the true story of a man that was wrongly accused of murder. When the body of a rich widow is found, the only clue is "Omar m'a tuer" written in her blood. The gardener was convicted of the murder and sentenced to 18 years in prison.


The movie is at 6pm and I will be giving my review of it later on tonight.  

Zellers Family Restaurant - Kids Eat for Free this Weekend

Good deal this weekend, kids eat for free Friday, Saturday and Sunday. There is a great restaurant where Fantasy Fair is located. The staff are friendly and its quiet.

I just went shopping there and I got such things as hot rod cars for $1, a little people set regularly $39.99 on for $23.99, a potty for $11.99. The best thing is that I bought 10 items and they gave me and additional $10 off.

Overall a great deal and worth shopping. There are lots more little girls stuff than little boys and the baby deals are pretty good. All sales are final but at the prices they are selling them it is worth the risk.

When Did My Shirt Become a Kleenex?

As a baby Master D rarely spit up. I can count on one hand how many times he spit up and each time it was on himself. As I watched other parents I thought how lucky I was.

Lately however, my t-shirt has become a kleenex. Each time he cries when he doesn't get his way, he cuddles up on me and wipes his nose on my shoulder. I don't realize at the time he has done this until much later when I look in the mirror and notice the white marks. The other thing he does is wipe his mouth on me by giving me a hug. I think I am getting a hug for free when really he is using me as a napkin to wipe his mouth (often after he has had yogurt).So now my once clean t-shirt has white marks on it from a day of playing with Master D.

While my t-shirts are messy, I wouldn't change in all of the hugs I have gotten throughout the day. I don't mind having my t-shirt double as a kleenex if it means I get to hug Master D. Everything is washable after all.

Living with a 2 Door Car

Both my husband and I have two door coupes. I have Honda Civic and he has a Honda Accord. When I first got pregnant, panic set in because we figured we were going to need a 4 door car. Neither of us wanted to spend the money to upgrade nor did we want to accept the fact that we were no longer 2 door car type of people.

We talked to various people to see what cars worked for them. One friend of mine had a 4 door car but it was a  small one. They had two children and both were very tall people. Her comments to me were to get used to the fact that your knees would be close to the dashboard no matter what size of car you got for the first year. She was right. Another friend had a 2 door Honda Accord and said it was great if the pacifier dropped it you could reach back and pop it back in. That trick came in handy a few times. 

People wonder how you get a child into a 2 door car. Its easy. The front seat moves forward and you are able to step inside a bit to strap them in. In the first year it was harder to get Master D out of my parents' car than my car because the front seat didn't move forward that much. You ended up having to lift straight up instead of up and to the side. Now Master D can crawl into the car himself. He can get up into the seat and all I have to do is turn him around. In the end we have survived living in a 2 door car. In fact, we rationalized that we could even have another one if we wanted and we would still be okay. 

In today's society it is easy to get caught up in the "bigger is better" mentality. You may have a little more room but you can make it work in something smaller. We saved money by keeping the cars that were fully paid for and Master D doesn't know any different.

Zellers Family Restaurant

Yesterday we were out and we decided to try something different. We had a 2 for 1 coupon (compliments of the the Entertainment Book) for the Zellers Family Restaurant. I haven't been there since I was a little kid. In fact I don't know anyone that goes there except for seniors.

I have to say I was very surprised at my experience. The food was good and reasonably priced. Of course my husband had to order the most expensive thing on the menu (Sliders) but overall with a $5 tip it came to $25 for all three of us to eat. In total we saved about $8. Here are the benefits of eating there:
1) There are high chairs set up for children. In a food court it is impossible to get your toddler to sit in one of those chairs for very long. There is so much noise and distraction that they can barely focus on the food.
2) It is quite and relaxing. The busiest thing in the restaurant was the waitress who was running around serving everyone.
3) The food was reasonably priced. I had a BLT with fries and a drink for $6.50. If I had gone to the food court I would have spent the same amount of money.
4) Each kid gets a colouring book and crayons. This is a great distraction when you are trying to eat your meal or wait for it (which didn't take very long to come)
5) The service was very good. The waitress was friendly and gave Master D a free cookie.

Overall I was very surprised that we enjoyed it as much as we did. As were were leaving the waitress mentioned that kids eat for free on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Now I have to go back.

Overall I recommend trying it out.
