When are Toots and Burps No Longer Cute?

As babies and toddlers our little ones are constantly burping and tooting away. Often in public. As adults we can't help but laugh because we can't believe something that tiny can make that loud of a sound. Children are quick to pick up on the fact that it makes us laugh which means that every time they do it, they laugh too.

At what stage do we decide that it is no longer sociably acceptable to burp or toot? How does a child comprehend that one day it is funny and the next day mommy and daddy are telling them to behave and not to do it in public?

For now, my little guy is wandering around tooting up a storm...giggling all the way. I can't help but laugh at the sound.
